A Rare Disease is any disease, disorder, illness, or condition affecting fewer than 200,000 people in the United States is considered to be rare. There are approximately 7,000 rare diseases. Most rare diseases are genetic. Chances are you know someone who might have a rare disease. Many different types of cancer fall under the umbrella of "rare diseases", including many pediatric cancers. 72% of the diseases are genetic and almost 1 out of 5 cancers is rare. Rare Disease Day is the globally-coordinated movement on rare diseases, working towards equity in social opportunity, healthcare, and access to diagnosis and therapies for people living with a rare disease. Rare Disease Day is observed every year on 28 February (or 29 in leap years)—the rarest day of the year. People are asked to wear stripes or bright bold colors. Those with a rare disease are called zebras in the medical field, many also consider themselves to be unicorns.

Congratulations to eight members of the Somerville High School Band for receiving superior ratings on their performances of two woodwind quartets at the UIL Region 18/26 Band Solo & Ensemble Contest. The event was held at Smithville High School on Saturday, February 18th. Abigail Flencher, Aubrey Kovasovic, Daimeyn Ellis-Edison, and RaMaya Carter received a first division rating for their performance of a clarinet quartet called "Chase of the Centaurs" by Richard Walker. Judge's comments included: "Great job of staying together from the beginning to the end", "Always know who your metronome is", and "Awesome preparation." Wendy Perez, Keyanah Crowl, Aleena Isom, and Jena Foster received a first division rating for their performance of a saxophone quartet called "Just For Show" by Lennie Niehaus. Judge's comments included: "Nice preparation on your quartet," "Everyone has good characteristic sounds," "Now work to blend together better," and "Start to add all of the dynamic markings." Both of these ensembles are UIL Class One works, so these students have earned the right to advance to the UIL State Solo and Ensemble Contest in Pflugerville on May 29, 2023. Congratulations again to these outstanding musicians.

Good morning from the Somerville High School Art Department! We had a successful second year in the V.A.S.E. competition! (Visual Arts Scholastic Event) Gage Tuck and Jharene Clare Velarde both earned the highest rating of a "4" in the Region competition which boosted them to the area competition. If a student wins in "Area" they advance to state. Neither advanced, but they did a great job and were part of the "art walk" on Saturday of art students from Region 6. Three students received a "3", the second highest rating, Brandyn Carter, Karie Dawn Heckert, and Javen Henderson. The best part of the competition was the chance to speak to a juror about their art face to face and receive constructive feedback and praise on their competition artwork. During the "art walk" we were able to see other successful works of art created by students from across Region 6. Congratulations Art Students! The Somerville High School Art Students made Valentine's Day Cards. These are a few of the cards made to bring a smile to those who view them. The students were asked to create a card for someone who means a lot to them and has worked to support the student and help them get where they are today. Happy Valentine's Day! Ms. Cochran
